What is Sonic?
Developed by Sonic Labs (formerly Fantom Opera), Sonic is a high-performance, EVM-compatible Layer 1. By refactoring Fantom’s core components, it delivers ultra-fast transactions at extremely low cost. Sonic has already fostered a diverse application ecosystem spanning various sectors, including trading, bridging, lending, and derivatives.
The network’s native token, S, is used to pay gas fees. Holders can also stake S to secure the network, earn rewards, and vote on future upgrades.
How It Works
Sonic employs an ABFT consensus mechanism built upon Proof-of-Stake (PoS) and DAG.
Directed Acyclic Graphs (DAG): A non-linear data structure that removes the block-by-block bottleneck of traditional chains. Validators create and propagate event blocks asynchronously, forming a DAG structure that supports high parallelism. Because global synchronization is not required, throughput rises dramatically.
Asynchronous Byzantine Fault Tolerance (ABFT): A consensus algorithm that operates on top of the DAG. It enables these parallel events to be ordered into a final, immutable, and globally consistent sequence, achieving near-instant transaction finality.
